Piedmont Ecovillage is an intentional community currently in the formation stage in Richmond, Virginia. Their intention is to create a healthy environment where children can play together in safety and where neighbors work collaboratively towards the good of the community while respecting each other’s independence.

Are Tiny Houses On Foundation Legal In Washington, D.C.?
When it comes to tiny homes on foundation, construction codes for the District of Columbia allow them, but only in specific neighborhoods, and only as accessory dwelling units. These neighborhoods include R-1, R-2, and R-3 zones, or low-density residential areas, such as the Brookland and Chevy Chase neighborhoods.
Additionally, in D.C., tiny houses cannot be more than 35% of the gross floor area of the primary home to which the tiny house in an accessory dwelling unit. It is difficult to live in a tiny house full time in the District of Columbia.
At a minimum, the primary house adjacent to the tiny home must be 1,200 square feet in most zones and 2,000 square feet in all R-1 residential zones. Tiny homes must also be adjacent to either a 24-foot-wide alley, or a 15-foot-wide alley and at most 300 feet from a main road for fire safety.
Are Tiny Houses On Wheels Legal In Washington, D.C.?
It is pretty difficult to live in a tiny house on wheels full time in Washington, D.C. Not only is it a legal challenge, but the layout of the city is not very conducive to mobile living.
The District of Columbia classifies THOWs as recreational vehicles, which follows section § 50–2201.04b of their RV code, which makes it a challenge to live in a THOW full time.
However, there are lots of travel bloggers out there who give advice on ways to make this possible. If you move your THOW at the right times and don’t stay in one D.C. RV park too long, it is possible to live in a THOW full time.
Make sure if you plan to do this, you do a lot of reading around RV laws in the District of Columbia to make sure you’re doing so legally.
