Why Americans Don’t Recycle

It’s a curious thing why so many Americans don’t recycle, currently just a little more than half of Americans do.  There is a very different attitude than I have seen in other countries and it seems to vary from city to city as well.  I know in some places, recycling isn’t a service offered, while some places its an optional pay for service.  Here in Charlotte, NC it is lumped into our taxes and every home is given a recycle bin.  But even though the bins are provided and people have already paid for the service, they refuse to recycle.  I have heard everything from I don’t know what I can recycle to “I’m not a tree hugger, I don’t recycle on principle.”  :palm to face:  Anyway, here is a interesting info graphic on recycling:

  1. In Charlotte, waxed cardboard juice boxes, tetra packs, etc ARE recyclable and Cat liter, as far as I know (and I’ve been on the tour) is not. Here’s the list for Charlotte: http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/SWS/CurbIt/Recycling/Pages/Home.aspx

  2. I live in Boston and Pizza Boxes and Juice boxes are Recyclable, love the graphic though

  3. They don’t let me recycle pizza boxes where I live (upstate NY). They do now have a great recycling program for old electronics; like tv’s, keyboards, computers, etc. My workplace was terrible about recycling. We started a recycling plan and had to make is super easy for people to do it. It took some nagging as well. I don’t know why so many people wouldn’t recycle when it was made so convenient. It was almost like they didn’t recycle as a protest to something. Who knows. People got used to it at work once they were fishing recyclables out of the trash though! Now it is second nature.

  4. Why don’t I recycle? Because it’s inconvenient and I don’t want to take the time. I’m also sick of hearing about how it’s supposedly my “responsibility” to recycle. Just shut up about it already.

  5. I’m just going to say most don’t because they are too lazy and just don’t give a shit. After trying to get some of my dorm room friends to do it only a few keep up with it the others said it was too much work E.I. Lazy.

  6. We would love to recycle in our area,(Midwest)however NO recycling programs are offered or even considered by the local government. Rural people burn trash in barrels and/or throw large items into ravines. They only recently quit taking electronics here in this small town and now people must pay a fee to dispose of them. Like with most things, the Midwest lags behind both coasts by about 10 or 15 years.

  7. I used to recycle cans and bottles but the idiots who collected them would spill some of them on my lawn and every week I’d have to pick them up. I finally got sick of it and now I refuse to recycle on principal.

  8. Why don’t I recycle? Because it’s inconvenient and I don’t want to take the time. I’m also sick of hearing about how it’s supposedly my “responsibility” to recycle. Just shut up about it already.

  9. Most people who don’t recycle are either selfish, lazy, or both. For example, “Because it’s inconvenient and I don’t want to take the time.”
