Inspirations For Change

CIMG1187

So I have been inspired by the folks at Path To Freedom.  While I don’t ever think I will go as far as they do, I really want to bring in allot of things that they do into my life.  I have recently just installed a new raised bed, which I planted Lima Beans, Snap Peas, Mustard, Spinach, Rosemary and Lavender.  I of course want to expand this, but I will have to wait till next season.

The next thing I tried to do is to have chickens.  I wanted 3 Hens to get my own eggs, after researching, choosing a coop design, finding out where I can get chickens the Home Owners Association shot me down.

Apparently someone had hatched 50 chicks from eggs for an activity with their kid, then realized “aww crap I have 50 chickens” and let them go amuck in the neighborhood.  Needless to say, the Home Owners Association were jaded and my hands tied.

Just tonight I tried baking my own bread, with aspirations of never needing to go to the grocery store and knowing what was in my bread, I was excited!  As it turns out this excitement was justified!

These are the first three loafs I made myself, a lil odd shaped, but they tasted so good!

Even better, it takes only 4 ingredients, all of which you might already have and are really cheap to get anywhere.  I found this great recipe that is stupid simple and taste great too!  The best part is from start to finish, it took 4 hours including proofing, rising, etc.

I actually made this!

I actually made this!

I had a bit of trouble with the dough being so sticky then I found the video below.  So basically use the recipe and directions at this website here.  But incorporate the techniques of the video below to overcome the stickiness.  The final product was below, nothing fancy, but for a first time it doesn’t look bad and it tasted amazing!

Chair With A Drawer

Found this little chair with a built in drawer, for some reasons it really struck a cord with me. What I like about it is that its discrete and it offers a great storage advantage in seemingly wasted space. What you could put in this, I don’t know really know. The only thing  that comes to mind is a mobster scene where two mobsters sit across from each other, Big Jim quietly reaches into his chair drawer and pulls out his Glock and seals the deal. Besides gruesome euphemism, I could see maybe keeping a shoe horn or polishing gear. Perhaps a…. I have no idea…. What purpose do you all think this would be good for?

Many of you read a week or two ago about REBURBIA, a contests about revising the way we live in suburbia.  Many of you understand that we need to relocalize in order to sustain ourselves.  The day of the 1400 mile salad needs to come to an end.  Anyway, the contest has announced its top 20 submissions and you can vote on them.  Check it out here

It’s A Great Big World Out There

Today I found these awesome websites that talk about issues that concern Tiny Living.  While they are not Tiny House related, there are huge overlaps and great resources.

The first is technomadia.com which is a website of a couple who lives in a camping trailer and travels all around the United States.  They work online, get their power from the sun, and live a nomadic lifestyle and many other interesting solutions to issues that we face as Tiny Home dwellers.  I have linked (above) to a great article about the common excuses they encounter when people want to adopt a similar lifestyle, its great!

The second  is called Location Independent.  It’s a great website that talks about how where you work should mean where you live.  I really like this idea and hope to transition to this workstyle once things calm down with the economy.  The great thing about the world we live in is that there are amazing places to see and amazing tools to let us work and play from those places.  One example would be Skype or vonage.  Both these services allow us talk with people anywhere like we were down the street!  I have a friend who have Vonage phone number which is a Charlotte NC phone number (704.xxx.xxxx) when you call him its crystal clear (better than what I get on my cell) but he is in Cape Verde AFRICA!   Its amazing world out there, don’t let roadblocks stop your from venturing forth!
